While I was browsing through Alltrails, I stumbled upon a new to me nature trail, Highbanks Metro Park, close to where I live! Instead of just scrolling through online stores looking at new hiking gear, I decided to switch things up and check out some hiking trails near me.

So, after a quick look at the 15-acre Highbanks Metro Park, I hopped into my Jeep for a short 10-minute drive. And let me tell you, as soon as I got there and parked, I couldn't help but notice this huge eagle nest right next to the Nature Center. But wait, there's more to this little metropolitan park and natural area!

This place is a real gem! Highbanks Metro Park, nestled just north of Columbus in Lewis Center, Ohio, has towering pine trees and is bustling with wildlife. It's like a little outdoor paradise packed into a small space! And I think it’s one of the most beautiful metro park I’ve seen yet.

This park is a hotspot for locals, outdoor lovers, and photographers alike, so it's no wonder the parking areas fill up quickly. Better set that alarm a little earlier if you want to secure your spot during the weekend!

Once inside the park, you'll find a wealth of amenities and facilities to enhance your experience. From picnic areas to restrooms, the park is well-equipped to cater to your needs. Be sure to grab a trail map at the Nature Center to help navigate your way through the lush landscape.

The Nature Center: Gateway To Adventure

There are several parking spots scattered throughout the park, and let me tell you, they fill up fast! If you're aiming for the Nature Center Parking Area, make sure to get there bright and early during the weekend to snag a spot.

At the heart of Highbanks Metro Park lies the Nature Center, it's a real treat, a treasure trove of discovery and adventure! Step inside and a world of wonder will greet you, you'll find an expansive library, a captivating spot for bird watching, and even a cool interactive area for kids. One of the highlights of the Nature Center is its interactive exhibits, which offer hands-on learning experiences for visitors of all ages.

Oh, and don't forget to check out the massive eagle nest on display—it's pretty impressive! Whether you're a nature enthusiast or just curious about the world around you, the Nature Center is the perfect starting point for your Highbanks adventure.

Hiking Trails - Highbanks Metro Park

Dripping Rock Loop: A Popular Trail for All Skill Levels

According to fellow hikers on AllTrails, the top spot for hiking in Highbanks Metro Park is the Dripping Rock Loop. This scenic 2.6 mile route with moderate elevation gains winds its way, (about 190’), through the forest, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

With its gentle slopes, well-maintained paths, and generally regarded as an easy route, there are a few steep sections to keep things interesting. Dripping Rock Loop is definitely suitable for hikers of all skill levels. And during the weekend it’s a bustling hotspot for hikers, runners, and walkers alike, so don't be surprised if you bump into some fellow outdoor enthusiasts along the way!

Along the way, keep an eye out for the park's namesake dripping rock, a natural marvel that adds to the trail's allure.

Just a heads up though, if you were planning to bring your furry friend along, you might want to rethink it. Unfortunately, dogs aren't allowed on this particular trail, so you'll have to leave your pup at home for this adventure.

Overlook Loop: Adding Mileage and Scenic Views

If you're itching for more miles and a bit of extra adventure, consider adding the Overlook Loop to your Dripping Rock Loop hike! By combining these two trails, you'll bump up your mileage to a cool 5.5 and elevation gain by 354’. It's kind of like a Goldilocks situation—not too easy, not too tough, just right in the middle! People generally think it's a moderately challenging route, so you can expect a bit of a workout but nothing too crazy.

As you traverse the Overlook Loop, you'll encounter a variety of landscapes, from dense woodlands to open meadows. Be sure to have your camera, as you won't want to miss capturing the beauty of this picturesque trail.

And bonus: Along the way, you'll come across a sweet deck area with a killer view overlooking the Olentangy River. It's the perfect spot to catch your breath and soak in some stunning scenery.

Just a heads up! When you're out there on the trail, watch your step. The gravel can be a bit slippery at times, and we all know those unexpected tumbles aren't exactly fun. I’ve taken a tumble a time or two. So, take it slow, stay aware, and let's avoid any unintentional acrobatics.

While this combo hike is sure to be a blast, it's a no-go for furry companions as well. You'll have to plan your adventure without them.
